Singapore Airlines Flies Inaugural A380 Flight From Tokyo

20 May 2008 A Singapore Airlines A380 took off from Tokyo’s Narita Airport today, marking the first intra-Asia service of the world’s largest commercial aircraft.

The inaugural flight from Tokyo, SQ637, carrying 420 passengers, departed from Narita Airport at 1448hrs. It is scheduled to arrive in Singapore at 2035hrs (all times local).

The first flight from Tokyo is another milestone in civil aviation – the 30th anniversary of Narita Airport, which also falls on 20 May.

“We are honoured to be the first to operate the A380 to and from Japan as part of Narita Airport’s 30th anniversary celebrations. We are also pleased to celebrate our own fortieth anniversary of commencement of services between Singapore and Japan with the start of A380 services”, said Singapore Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Chew Choon Seng, who farewelled the flight from Tokyo, after having earlier flown in the aircraft from Singapore.

“We are proud to bring to the Japanese market our extensive range of new cabin products and services, on what is the world’s cleanest, greenest, quietest and most fuel-efficient large passenger aircraft,” said Mr Chew.

Five Japanese couples are celebrating their honeymoon onboard the inaugural flight back to Singapore, marked with honeymoon cakes and champagne presented by the Singapore Airlines cabin crew.

The inflight experience on both inaugurals today is further enhanced by meals specially designed for the flights by two award-winning members of the Singapore Airlines International Culinary Panel: Chef Yoshihiro Murata from Japan’s Kikunoi restaurant and Chef Gordon Ramsay, from London, who also owns a French restaurant in Tokyo.

Singapore Airlines is the first to fly the A380, and is currently the only airline operating the superjumbo.

It has seen significant interest and demand from customers for travel on the A380.

Almost 200,000 customers have flown on the aircraft since the aircraft’s entry into service in October last year.

The Singapore Airlines A380 features the Singapore Airlines Suites, which set a new standard in ultimate premium air travel by featuring a bold and unique concept where each Suite is the customer’s very own private cabin in the sky.

It is also configured with the new award-winning Business Class, which boasts the widest seat in its class in a spacious 1-2-1 configuration on the upper deck, as well as the New Economy Class, which delivers more comfort and space thanks to the use of innovative design.

The new KrisWorld, Singapore Airlines’ inflight entertainment system, features over 1,000 entertainment options, newly-introduced PC applications such as office software, Media Player, Photo Viewer and PDF Reader, and an updated suite of games.
